Vince Staples

Long Beach’s Vince Staples first registered beyond the underground through a string of appearances alongside Odd Future affiliates—Earl Sweatshirt, Mike G., and The Jet Age of Tomorrow—before linking with Talib Kweli’s Blacksmith label and Mac Miller for Stolen Youth. The 2014 EP Hell Can Wait, released via No I.D.’s ARTium Recordings under Def Jam, earned critical acclaim and introduced a rapper equally adept at deadpan menace and sharp observation. His debut album, Summertime ’06, followed in 2015, anchored by the platinum single “Norf Norf” and a vivid, uneasy portrait of his environment.

From that foundation, Staples has refused stasis. Big Fish Theory pushed his sound into avant-garde club textures and dance electronics, while FM! tightened the format without dulling the edge. Later albums—Vince Staples, Ramona Park Broke My Heart, and Dark Times—continued his blend of West Coast storytelling, conscious reflection, and deadpan wit. In 2026, Cry Baby arrived as his first fully independent project for Loma Vista, closing the Def Jam chapter. Beyond records, he has acted in film and television, kept a foothold in the Cutthroat Boyz trio, and created and starred in the Netflix series The Vince Staples Show, which ran for two seasons.
