$uicideboy$ emerged from New Orleans in 2013 as a duo founded by cousins Scott “Scrim” Arceneaux Jr. and Aristos “Ruby da Cherry” Petrou. They sharpened their identity on SoundCloud, pairing self-produced, abrasive beats with unflinching lyrics around substance abuse and suicidal ideation. That unsparing honesty, rather than mere shock value, helped them become one of the most prominent acts in the underground rap scene. Operating under their own G*59 Records, with distribution through The Orchard, they kept control of a catalog built on a steady run of EPs and mixtapes.
Projects such as Now the Moon’s Rising, High Tide in the Snake’s Nest, My Liver Will Handle What My Heart Can’t, and Eternal Grey documented a distinct, gloomy aesthetic while their audience expanded beyond SoundCloud. In 2018, the duo released their debut studio album, I Want to Die in New Orleans, which became their first top-ten entry on the US Billboard 200. A 2019 collaborative EP with Travis Barker and Korn’s James Shaffer indicated the breadth of their influence.
