Too $hort

Todd Anthony Shaw, better known as Too $hort, built a career that defines self-made West Coast rap. Recording since 1983, he became one of the genre’s first recognized figures of the late 1980s. His fourth album, Born to Mack (1987), sold tens of thousands from the trunk of his car, prompting Jive Records to reissue it the following year. The momentum set the tone for a catalog grounded in pimping, promiscuity, drug culture, and survival.

Life Is… Too Short (1989) went double platinum and marked his Billboard 200 debut. Short Dog’s In The House (1990) delivered “The Ghetto,” his highest-charting Hot 100 single as a lead artist. He followed with four straight platinum, top-ten albums in the 1990s—Shorty the Pimp, Get in Where You Fit In, Cocktails, Gettin’ It (Album Number Ten)—a stretch that placed him among the few to work with both Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. during their commercial peaks.

Too $hort has also worked as a connector. He formed the Dangerous Crew in 1988, founded Up All Nite Records in 2006, and in 2020 joined Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, and E-40 in Mount Westmore. Later work such as the single “Blow the Whistle” and the album I Love the Bay (2007) shows a veteran still keyed to his region’s sound, a survivor comfortable in the legacy he helped define.
