Project Pat

Project Pat—born Patrick Earl Houston in Memphis—occupies a specific lane in Southern hip-hop’s underground lineage. As the older brother of Juicy J, he moves in the orbit of Three 6 Mafia’s core creativity, but his own voice is something else: a nasal, slack-tongued menace that turns menace into sing-song. Before stepping out solo, Pat was part of the group the Kaze, joining in 1998, the same year their debut Kamakazie Timez Up appeared. That year matters, because it sits at the hinge of Memphis’s raw tape era and the national breakthrough that would follow.

His solo catalog is a testament to his stubbornness. Ghetty Green (1999) and Murderers & Robbers (2000) established a grim, melodic bounce; Mista Don’t Play: Everythangs Workin (2001) pushed that vision further and remains a touchstone for grime-clean, percussive Southern rap. The track “Chickenhead” and its remix, paired with “Don’t Save Her,” both arrived in 2001, cementing his crosstown fame. Later recordings, including Crook By Da Book: The Fed Story (2006) and Walkin’ Bank Roll (2007), kept his storytelling alert to crime’s toll. He collaborated with Juicy J and D.J. Paul on Good Googly Moogly - 4 Pack (2006), but the essential Project Pat remains a solo act: unhurried, predatory, and unmistakably Memphis.
