Bowling Green Hip-hop

Nappy Roots: biography, discography and legacy in the Genzeta Clips archive.

Nappy Roots have long occupied a distinct pocket of American alternative Southern rap, one built on earthy textures, collegiate camaraderie, and a stubborn sense of place. The group came together in Bowling Green, Kentucky, in 1995 while its members were attending Western Kentucky University. That origin shaped their identity: not a street-corner crew but a coalition of ambitious students—Fish Scales (originally from Milledgeville, Georgia), Skinny DeVille, B. Stille, and Ron Clutch, alongside later-departed members R. Prophet and Big V. They carried a rootsy, down-home cadence that set them apart from harder-edged contemporaries.

Their breakthrough arrived with 2002’s Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz, which yielded the enduring singles “Po’ Folks,” “Awnaw,” and “Roun’ the Globe,” followed by “Good Day” from the 2003 Wooden Leather project. Those tracks became anthems of laid-back resilience. Over time, the lineup shifted—R. Prophet left in 2006, Big V in 2012—but the core continued to release music steadily, revisiting and expanding their catalog with projects like The 40 Akerz Project (2015), Another 40 Akerz (2017), and Kentucky Fried Hip Hop (2019). Collaborations, including work with Rob Run Corleone of Empire Distribution on the South Rituals mixtape, have kept them connected to the industry’s independent side.
