Born in Champaign, Illinois, Ludacris moved to Atlanta, where he first began rapping after a brief stint as a DJ. He formed Disturbing tha Peace in the late 1990s and released his debut, Incognegro (1999). Its single “What’s Your Fantasy” reached the Billboard Hot 100’s top 40, prompting Def Jam to re-release the project as his major-label debut, Back for the First Time (2000). That album peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 and gave him “Southern Hospitality,” a collabo with Pharrell that underlined his place in the early-2000s surge he helped lead.
The multi-platinum run that followed—Word of Mouf (2001), Chicken-n-Beer (2003), and The Red Light District (2004)—made him one of the first Dirty South artists to achieve sustained mainstream dominance. His chart-topping lead singles “Stand Up” and “Money Maker” were matched by three guest No. 1s: “Yeah!”, “Glamorous”, and “Break Your Heart”; he also appeared on Justin Bieber’s “Baby.” Release Therapy (2006) and Theater of the Mind (2008) leaned into street-level reflection, while Battle of the Sexes (2010) snapped back toward his more playful early sound. He has collected three Grammys, a SAG Award, a Critics’ Choice Award, and an MTV VMA.
Away from music, Ludacris is a private pilot in addition to an actor—most recognizably as Tej Parker in the Fast & Furious saga since 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)—with notable roles in Crash, Gamer, and New Year’s Eve. In 2021 he created and starred in Netflix’s Karma’s World. His catalogue balances gimmicky charm with genuine lyrical dexterity—a rare crossover act able to turn a carnal club hook into a springboard for pop ubiquity.
