Digable Planets

Digable Planets made jazz rap feel like a quiet conversation. Assembled in Brooklyn in 1987, the group brought together Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler, Mariana “Ladybug Mecca” Vieira and Craig “Doodlebug” Irving, three complementary rappers whose interplay became a template for alternative hip-hop’s more introspective wing. Theirs was a sound built on unhurried cadences, jazz textures and a bookish curiosity — rap that invited close listening instead of demanding immediate reaction.

Their debut, Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space), arrived in 1993 and established the trio’s low-slung, sample-rich universe. The following year’s Blowout Comb deepened that vision, moving further into live-instrumental territory and sparser arrangements. After a long gap, Beyond the Spectrum – The Creamy Spy Chronicles surfaced in 2005, and Digable Planets Live in 2017 captured the trio revisiting their catalogue in performance. A compact discography, but a meaningful one: for listeners of jazz rap’s formative stretch, Digable Planets remain a defining presence in the margins of mainstream hip-hop.
