Afroman

Afroman is the stage name of Joseph Edgar Foreman, an American rapper, singer, and musician from Los Angeles. Born July 28, 1974, he made his mark with The Good Times (2001), his fourth studio album, which featured the singles “Because I Got High” and “Crazy Rap.” The former received a 2002 Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance, bringing Afroman mainstream recognition.

Two decades later, Afroman turned his attention to a personal legal battle. Following a 2022 raid on his Ohio home by sheriff’s officers — one that resulted in no charges or criminal evidence — he wrote protest songs and collected them on his 18th studio album, Lemon Pound Cake. When several officers sued him over the music videos’ unflattering security-camera footage, Afroman argued that his work was protected speech, and the courts ruled in his favor. The ACLU, in an amicus brief, called the case a strategic lawsuit against public participation. He has continued to release new material, including the albums Messed Up My Spine, 20 Twenty-Fro, and Homies, maintaining a steady output.
